If you need to build yourself a chicken coop, you don’t have a to spend a fortune on materials to get the job done. Many people construct fine looking coops from the recycled materials that they have lying around the workshops, or can pick up from the local junk yard. All you need to get started is a pile of spare materials and some basic woodwork skills.

To show you what I mean and prove my point I have a couple of video below where people have done just this. Both designs include all the necessary features and are compact enough to fit into most gardens. With some secure outdoor area around them both would be fine for keeping a small number of chickens.

First up we have an inside tour around a chicken coup that was made out of discarded wooden pallets. This video takes a close look inside the coop and gives good basic examples of how to create your nesting boxes, ramps, roosting poles etc.

This next video is even more hardcore on the recycling side. It seems that just about every piece of scrap that you can imagine is used in this one. In particular the approach that he takes to insulating the coop is an interesting one. This will be a useful approach to take if you live in a colder part of the world.
